Vicars Hodge at Sarnia Lawrence HOuse. Show opening soon
Vicars' "Careful Craftsmanship in Wood" will form part of the Private Member's Show -- November and December 2024 at Sarnia's Lawrence House. We've been invited to place a considerable sized group of hand-crafted wood items. I'm still putting together the items to be submitted for the jury panel. Here is a sneak peak at some of the items I envisage as being on display. A live-edge Walnut and Resin Coffee Table (Locally harvested American Black Walnut with hand-cut thru mortise and tenon legs); several End Grain Cutting boards from a new group I am making in Walnut with Birdseye Maple edge-banding; a few selected of turned items including a 12" segmented fruit-bowl with turquoise inlay; and a few Charcuterie Boards and some Jewellery Boxes. I am not the only exhibitor -- other artists in 2d and 3d mediums will have items. As this is a curated show all items will be locally made works of art. More details will be published in October on the lawrencehouse.ca website. Here is a sneak peak of some of the items I am including. All will be priced as displayed.
At last --I've waited 5 years to get into this locally harvested Black Walnut. 3 large trees that were a nuisance to my neighbours I had cut down and hauled to a local mill. Now it is 2000 Board Feet of live-edge slabs and select lumber! This will be a creative fall and winter. In the next year my lumber pile will become: End Grain Cutting Boards, Live-Edge River Tables, Charcuterie Boards, and Segmented Bowls.

Once in a while we all make mistakes. Sometimes they prompt us to creative moments. In a moment of inattention I went through the bottom of this segmented bowl creating a lovely funnel. I walked away from it in frustration. The next day I created this turquoise and segmented bow. It required some creative additions: a new solid maple bottom, filling the funnel cavity with turquoise chips and epoxy resin and returning the outside. Rather a nice end for a frustrating moment at the lathe.
