Electricity
The electric current in Middle East is 220 volts AC, single phase, 50 Hertz.
Most local sockets are of the three-pronged variety but most can accept some European two-pronged plugs as well. Electric shavers, traveling irons and other small appliances may require adapters and/or transformers which can be easily purchased. Hotels often supply adapters but if you have your own, bring it.
In Israel & Palestine the plugs/sockets are pretty much standard 3 Pin type “H” (as shown in the photo at left) but most of these receptacles accept the usual 2 pin European plug, type “C”.
In Jordan - there seems to be a "use whatever is handy" approach when it comes to electrical wiring. You never know what sockets you will find. Of course, all are 220 V. The majority are type C or Type H plugs (European round 2 or 3 pins). But sometimes find British "G" plugs (3 square pins) as well.

Converters and Adapters
Most if not all of our hotels provide Hair Dryers. Often an Iron is either in the room or available if you ask at the desk. If you have some personal device (ie CPAP) that requires 120V you will need to bring a voltage transformer and plug adapters with you. In recent years, most Laptops, Tablets, and Mobile Phone chargers are dual voltage -- automatically adapting for 120 V to 220 V. If that is the case, you don't need the transformer but just the plug adapter. Photo at top right (Vicars usually brings a few of these if you forget your own.) A new, helpful device is the PD rapid charger for Mobile Phones -- that fits the C or H Plugs of the Holy Land. It does not convert voltage - because for these applications that isn't needed. But it does give rapid charging for cell phones and a place to plug in your tablet. See photo to bottom right. |
